SHIDRAH Selected project
The Cathedra for the Study of Ethiopian Jewry.
A permanent home for the International Cathedra for the Study of Ethiopian Jewry at Ono Academic College. Sculpted surfaces, illuminated niches, artefact vitrines and archival content form one continuous space.
A setting for historical content
The room places written interpretation and archival material alongside objects. Sculpted surfaces and painted landscape connect the displays, while niches and vitrines create distinct places to pause and look.
Working at different scales
The wider views show the documentary wall as part of the room. Closer photographs reveal the framing of individual panels, pottery and instruments. The design moves between the overall environment and the particular object or account in front of a visitor.
Part of a wider commitment
The project belongs to Avi Tal’s wider body of Beta Israel heritage and memorial work across Israel. These spaces bring material craft into a setting for community history, remembrance and learning. For another institution, the starting point is the content, the audience and the room available.
