Studio commissions
Heritage spaces that hold a story.
A heritage room needs to give history a clear and respectful presence. Shidrah Studio combines sculptural environments, displayed objects, photographs and written interpretation to create spaces for learning and remembrance.

A body of work across Israel
Avi Tal’s work includes around ten to eleven Beta Israel heritage and memorial spaces across Israel, including projects in Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Afula, Yokneam, Be’er Sheva, Lod, Hadera and Kiryat Ono. The photographs represent several locations; individual images are not assigned a location unless it is confirmed.
History, objects and the room
A display can bring an object into focus, place a photograph beside an account, or use a sculpted setting to guide attention. The room’s physical elements need to support the content. The studio’s Beta Israel work includes collaboration with Amram Aklum on heritage content.
A commission with limited resources
Many of these spaces were made with exceptionally small budgets, close to cost, from a commitment to a history too often overlooked. For a new commission, the useful starting point is a clear content priority and a realistic scope: what visitors should encounter first, which objects need display, and what can be added later.
Preparing a brief
Share the intended audience, the room’s dimensions, the available budget and the material already collected. Identify who will approve historical text and image use. Display conditions, access, lighting and the needs of original objects should be reviewed with the relevant project professionals before fabrication.
Before we begin
Can a heritage room be developed in phases?
A phased scope can be discussed around the most important content and available funding. It helps to establish the overall story first so later additions remain coherent.
Do you have an example in an academic setting?
The International Cathedra for the Study of Ethiopian Jewry at Ono Academic College combines sculpted surfaces, archival interpretation and artefact displays. The project page shows this work in detail.
